Do we need Spam?

Our weekly food order arrived yesterday morning and all was there as ordered.. Dh asked me was there anything I thought we might need  when he was doing it, and I remarked to him that, some bloggers had noticed the emptying of shelves in supermarkets with the rumours of war ( You're all so informative Thank you!) I did say perhaps check our water and dried goods situation, but we're fully stocked up, as we have a pantry so always keep ahead of what we need. Jokingly he asked 'Did I want spam??'

'Only if I can have it battered and deep fried in beef dripping,' I replied!! I never had spam as a child, although there was spam around I suppose, but I didn't know of it.

But my Grandmother did make me battered chips with an egg cooked in the chip pan too! It was all delicious with a slice of white bread and butter.

I should have been fatter with all that dripping cooked food, but photographs of me as child showed this stick thin child, with curled hair and brown as berry. I did play 'out' all day and every day except Sundays of course. Sundays were chapel days and quiet times at home.

Do we need spam or extras?

Of course, we don't need Spam, but some treats are fun every once in a while.

I can remember eating spam sandwiches and 'scallops' from the fish and chip shop, which were mashed potato patties, battered and deep fried - a bit like the battered chips your grandmother made for you. Scrummy!
I always try to keep a well-stocked store cupboard just in case. It came in very handy during Covid. I won't be panic buying, but a few extras never go amiss.

We had Spam fritters occasionally for school dinner in the early 60s, a recipe from WW2 rationing.

I've had Spam but never again. so loaded with sodium and sugar. I dread to think we have to start storing more and more canned food with the thought of a war. I'm trying not to think of it yet.

I used to like Spam fritters. I even bought some Spam a little while ago.

Dice it and cook it off in the frying pan. The fat comes out and you are left with crispy meaty bits which go well in scrambled egg or tucked into a wrap or pita with some salad.

I can remember my dear mum serving delicious spam fritters, but not had any for many, many, many years.

All the best Jan
