M&S, The Coop and now Harrods; the loss of power in Spain and Portugal, all indicators of how reliant we are on technology.
Could we live without it? I don't know, I'm pretty reliant on it myself.. we order our food on line, I buy things I can't get locally on line, my meds are ordered on line and when I want to know something I look it up on line. So I am reliant on technology, more than I thought.
Could I live without it? When I was younger perhaps, although it took me several goes to pass my 2nd Class Guide badge where you had to light a fire with just 2 matches and twigs!! Ha ha.
I've read a lot of Apocalypses books and the main thing is water, so we always have supplies of bottled water. Did you realise you need power, so your water runs out of your tap, I think I did but hadn't given it much thought.
When I was still teaching and computers were first introduced, one Children's program, was setting up a Civilization and the children had to think what they would need. A water supply being the first so their 'dens' had to be near a river etc, a good program and I used to play it myself after school!
There is this book reduced to £99 from £140 but evidently its well worth the money.

The word you’re looking for is convenience not freedom. Sadly, the more ‘convenient’ things become, the less freedom we have. Anna.
I am glad that a recent Government report emphasised there is a need for cash, as certain groups in society are dependent on it. Many pensioners, homeless folk, and people in debt recovery programmes do not have/want credit cards. Many charities rely on coins in collection boxes. And children need to learn to budget using pocket money.
I think we are so reliant on technology now that it would be very difficult. I'm one of those people that pay cash whenever I can though, the thought of a cashless society is scary.
I guess the short answer is 'yes', bit only if you are not medically reliant on it for your life.I wouldn't last long without oxygen cylinders and concentrators, to put it bluntly. And my meds are also important to my survival; maybe not as crucial as insulin for diabetics. How about people on dialysis? It would soon become 'survival of the fittest'! I used to think about survival strategy, but now? I don't bother!
And so does I am now I've gotten used to it also. There are days when I'm not happy about it but it seems to be working for the rest of the world. Without big box stores anymore so much stuff has to be bought online whether we like it or not. I'm just not computer smart.
I wish there was an n-between, periods when some of the technology was unavailable. In Canada, the province of Quebec has banned cell phones on school grounds. Students will have to speak to each other again! I hope the Dept of Education does the same here. Teachers say students’ social skills have suffered since the pandemic.
We were just with friends last night and talked about this. We're so dependent on technology, and I really am too.
It would be difficult because so much of what we do uses the current technology. We would definitely be limited to buying local, cash and the mail system if it still worked.
Where I live, there are stores refusing to take cash. They only want credit cards which, to me, seems illegal but they are doing it. I hate the idea of everything we buy being tracked.
I think most of us would find it extremely difficult to live without technology. People do go off-grid and live a self-sufficient life, but living without running water must be the hardest thing.
The more mechanised and automated our lives become, the less will we be able to handle any situation by ourselves.
Mechanisation of our lives has solved a number of problems, but in return we have got another set of problems.
My latest post: Thank you!
Anna is right. It is convenient to use a card, but when you give someone else the authority to manage your finances, you become their slave. People who are in debt will never be free, unless they pay off the balance in full every month when the statement arrives. We all give away our freedoms to technology, but it would be wise to limit how much information we share.
We could do it if we HAD too, but it sure makes things a lot easier for all of us.
True. People don't know how to add things up in their head any more. Don't know how to write a shopping list. Just need a handheld gadget.
I live between Scotland and South Africa for the past 15 years at least in South Africa we have had regular power and water cuts, an app lets us not when the power goes off but water just stops for various reasons. We are all so used to it that we just carry on, if you are in the supermarket and the lightsgo out you stand still, so not to trip, and a few seconds later the generator is up and running. All traffic lights are treated as a 4 way stop. At home we don’t notice it as we have solar with a back up battery works everything except the cooker and the hot water tank but that has its own solar panel. We also have a 1000lt water tank in the garden.
It would be very difficult to live without modern technology. We have become too reliant on it.
