A Duty Read?

Knowing you have something

good to read before bed

is among the most

pleasurable of sensations.

Vladimir Nabokov

And that's what I think most evenings, and when its a really good book I will read till quite late, or even early morning.
However this one ...
...is giving me mixed feelings. I bought it for Dh for an extra Christmas present and he's read it and said he enjoyed it. So I'm reading it now and I'm struggling with it. It was advertised as a book like those of Chris Hammer's, who we've both read. Hammer's first book had a shocking start where the town's priest, standing on the church steps,  opens fire and shoots five men before turning the gun in himself. So I was expecting something similar. I'm nearly half way through and no 'fireworks!' so far. So a bit disappointing but I'll carry on because I feel a bit guilty giving Dh a bit of a dud!

But my library books look good. A Nora Roberts, and one by a new to me author Liz Nugent.. so I shall sit one afternoon this weekend and read Red Dirt Road, till I finish it, Dh says it speeds up a bit after you get past the middle. I do hope so, as at this moment in time its not thrilling me.
Have you ever read a book out of a feeling of duty, perhaps a Book Group choice?

Yes. The worst ones are when someone has bought a book for me and I know they will ask about it. I was given a seven hindred page jobby last year and loathed it!

No, not really, but then I don't belong to a book club. If I did, I probably would.
Have to read any of the Marion Todd books - I enjoy them very much indeed.

I read plenty of books thinking that I really should, in my younger days. Now I feel no guilt whatsoever on giving up on a book part-way through if I am not getting on with it. I haven't read the Chris Hammer book you mention, but it was made into a tv series and I watched that. It was absolutely gripping!

I used to always feel I had to finish books even when I wasn't enjoying them. I don't now. Some I finish and wish I hadn't started them, but that's not quite the same.

I can't remember the last time I read a real live book. These days all my reading is done on a kindle and I only get the free books. Yes, I'm that cheap...lol If a book doesn't grab me within the first chapter I can't finish it.

A good writing friend gave me Midnight's Children because it was his favourite book. It took me literally months to finish it and only did so because of him.

Some book club books were a chore but I always enjoyed the conversations later.

Actually one of the things I like about my book club is that it means I read books I wouldn't normally be drawn to, often with satisfying results. As other members have recommended them they usually have an interesting component that encourages discussion.

Other than text books when I was a student (many years ago) and work documents when I was working, I haven't forced myself to read anything I didn't enjoy reading. Life is too short for that!
