How to Cook Brains.

'Allow it to soak in salt water for an hour, then peel off the outer coating, cleaning off any bits. Put in milk over heat and cook for 15 minutes, no more. Then pour milk into a roux and mix thoroughly. Babies love this and eat this being unaware what it is.'

This was the instructions given to a young mum, trying to get her baby onto solids by her own mother! And is in the book I'm reading by Patrick Gale!

I wasn't given brains to eat as a child but tripe and onions arrived once, that I do remember and I hated it.

I don't think i ever gave my own children offal to eat but I do love pigs liver and we have it as an occasional meal. liver and bacon and onions is a favourite meal.

My little dog Mari loved liver too and I often cooked it for her. On one occasion it was gently cooking, when my Ex arrived home and remarked, 'That smells nice,'

'Its for the dog,' I replied and nothing more was said!

These days you don't often see it in shops. I wonder with the increasing rise in the cost of living and food costs rising, will we see more offal to buy, what do you think and would you buy and eat it?

My mother used to cook crumbed lambs brains. They were very soft with a delicate flavour, delicious. She also made steak & kidney in gravy, that was also delicious. And she had a mincer for making mince meat. There was no waste, the food was affordable and healthy. People didn't eat out or takeaway (except fish n chips).

Now I think about it my mother made lambs fry and bacon, this was absolutely delicious. We weren't too concerned what it was only that it tasted good. The mix the author talks about would have been full of nutrients.

I haven't had brains or tripe and can't see me doing so. I like liver, but my husband doesn't. He likes kidneys, but I can't stand them, so both of those are off the menu. My dad used to buy chitterlings and I enjoyed those when I was a child.

I used to eat liver and kidneys - not anymore. As for brains, tripe or heart - never!

Yikes - no brains for me and no liver either. I think just knowing what it is, is the biggest issue.

When we were first married I used to cook OH tripe and onions, but eventually the smell and texture of it meant it went off the menu. His Mum was from Lancashire and used to eat it raw with onions and vinegar. We love liver and I casserole it with onions. Xx

I used to be forced to eat liver as a child, but my Mum could do nothing to make me eat anything else in the offal line. The day my brother was sick onto his plate after being forced to eat the liver was the day my Mum gave up forcing us.

My mum used to cook brains and pigs feet for my dad, I've never tried either, they looked awful. But we do have liver and onions occasionally, we both love that.

I wish I could remember the exact recipe I used, but when my kids were little beef liver was very inexpensive. I had a way of cooking it that they would eat it and I told them it was pork chops.

When I was a child we ate lots of offal. Liver, kidneys, heart, tongue, trotters, tripe. I don't like it now
