Recently I read an article on what older people are advised to do.. you don't have to, but it seems you'd be healthier and happier if you did these things.
Walk every day. ... I try to.
Go out at least three times and a week and socialize. ... not three times every week, but we do like to get out and about.
Tidy up your living area before bed. Ha ha, we always have books around, but the cushions are tidy.
Always leave the kitchen clean after cooking.. we do this together, but there are occasions when we're tired and things are left till the morning.
Clean basin and toilet every day. This is done every other morning by me.. Dh cleans the shower twice a week.
Keep up to date with paper work. We have lidded boxes into which we pop letters and sort them all out regularly.
Make your bed every day.. Ours is done after we've showered and had breakfast, leaving it open to air. Although sometimes. when we're in a hurry to get out for an early appointment, we rush off and forget.
All seem feasible and things that most people do without thinking, however as you age some activities are difficult and they take longer than they did, when you were younger and able. Also you don't always want to walk, rain puts me right off going out, and sometimes I don't feel like being sociable. I've met people with whom, I don't want to socialize!
I personally don't mind a bit of clutter, this is our home, not a show house! And when someone once remarked to me about not doing your dishes at night, 'what if something happened to you and the kitchen was a mess,' she said. I replied that people would think.. 'poor love, she can't have felt well, she hasn't done last nights dishes!' And when we've got home and found the bed with the duvet opened back for the bed to air, I've had a lie on it and rested for a minute or two!
So what do you think, everything spic and span or a 'living home,' comfortable for you?
Oh dear, what is the best way to live, I wonder?

I thrive in clutter, lol. I am much neater now that I am retired but anything to distract me from cleaning works for me.
ReplyDeleteInteresting list and it makes sense. We do pretty good on it - not perfect, but ok!
ReplyDeleteI walk two times a day with my pup, I tell him we are each others' exercise coaches and encouragers. I don't mind a bit of mess in my home. I go out several times a week to meet friends, etc. Meeting friends is especially important and fun for those of us who live alone. Church on Sundays is a blessing too.
ReplyDeleteI like a lived in but clean home. I make the bed after I have had breakfast and it has aired. I clean the kitchen after I have used it. I don't have a set routine for other cleaning. It happens when it happens.
ReplyDeleteI don't get out much to socialise as I care for a family member every day. Nor do I walk every day. In an ideal world I would do both.
Oh me oh my! The best way to live is the way that works for you! I had a colleague who could not sleep unless she hoovered the whole of her house every evening after work; it was only herself and her husband at home, both working full time. I hoovered mine when I felt like it... failure doesn't come into the conversation at all. I've dismissed the word from my vocabulary.
ReplyDeleteI leave the kitchen (mostly) clean and tidy at night. But I admit to putting unsorted clean laundry in the spare bedroom if I'm too tired to put it away. I go outside for at least 5 minutes everyday, for fresh air and sunlight, even if I don't have a walk or go into town (car or bus) And chatting with neighbours and seeing friends at Church is really important to me. You are not a failure, you are a normal human being ❤️
ReplyDeleteI can't even be bothered to read that. I won't get sucked in to how I should live my life. I do it my way. If it all goes wrong I only have myself to blame. Toodle pip.
ReplyDeleteI like to try to keep everything picked up. I cannot say that I am the best for running the Dust mop or the dust cloth is often as it probably should be done. Now that the weather is better I am getting outside and boy have I missed that this winter.
ReplyDeleteThe best way to live is the way that suits you best. I always make my bed in the morning after it has aired for a couple of hours, I try to wash all the pots before I go to bed at night, I keep up to date on the washing and try to banish the dust bunnies. BUT, sometimes I fail, and then I give myself a bit of grace and have a catch up when I can.
ReplyDeleteI can't be bothered with 'you should be' lists. My home is MY home, and not for someone else's approbation. I'm not a sociable person, though enjoy a chat from time to time. I'm not driven by someone else's standards. I'm a GOW, really.😏😂🤣
ReplyDeleteIt sounds like to me that you are doing great with regular everyday activities.
ReplyDeleteWeather decides when I walk outside, but do try to do an inside walk most days. I do chair yoga three times a week. My bed is made after breakfast. Paper work sorted at the end of the month. Dishes have to be done right after dinner. My home needs to be clean and tidy every day. I meet with a fairly large group of crafty friends and also here in the apartment complex for social activities. Children, grands and great grands chat on line. I am 84, live alone. Love my life.
ReplyDeleteI don't walk or socialise every day but I do everything else everyday, I don't like clutter and always make sure the kitchen is clean and tidy before I go to bed, otherwise I think you are starting the day behind
ReplyDeleteThere are a plethora of helpful articles on so many subjects (I know I read quite a few) but it is always important to keep in mind our own personal circumstance and yes perhaps include some (or all) of the suggestions you've read (if they suit you) but as Sue says above 'The best way to live is the way that suits you best'
ReplyDeleteEnjoy the coming weekend.
All the best Jan
I do most of these things. Don't clean the bathroom every day though. I give it a good cleaning once a week and just spot clean when needed.
ReplyDeleteI like a nice neat house. It just makes me feel good having it in order but I'm not fanatical about.
I do go for a walk every morning.
I also make the bed every day and have always done that my whole life.
